Most of the staining related to braces is external (on the outer surface of teeth). The first step after the brackets are removed, is to clean and polish the teeth as well as remove any glue from the tooth surface. After that is accomplished, an in-office bleaching can be done, which usually yields immediate results, depending on the extent of initial staining. For a more controlled whitening process, bleaching trays can be custom made to fit the teeth, and a whitening gel is applied to the teeth for a number of hours each day. Another option is over-the-counter whitening strips that can be applied directly to teeth.
